These are Petroglyphs, images carved into stone. The stone has a thin top layer of dark rock. When chipped away, the lighter layers underneath are exposed. In this way, the Ancients have created images which have lasted through the ages. There are roughly 15,000 Petroglyphs in Petroglyph National Monument. The earliest Petroglyphs were created 3,000 years ago. But even newer arrivals, such as 17th century Spanish settlers made use of Petroglyphs, as well as late 19th century Anglos. Most Petroglyphs were created between 400 and 700 years ago by the Pueblo denizens of the region. Some images have an obvious meaning, others do not. The Ancients likely had a meaning for the images. You'll have to find your own. Click on the image to view the larger picture. Note: The Petroglyphs are numbered out of order, in accordance with my files. |
