These Desert Millipedes were commonplace in Petroglyph. I have no knowledge of the life cycle of the Desert Millipede. The images in "Writhing Millipedes" could be Millipedes mating, releasing egg sacks, or competing for moisture. They may also be secreting fluid and roll themselves into protective mounds of dirt. These small piles of dirt were also scattered in Petroglyph. Unfortunately, the Petroglyph visitors center was closed when I had finished my walk though Rinconda Canyon, so I have no answers. Note that Writhing Millipedes II and III are to be found in "Other Animals." |
