Located close to the intersection of Route 70 and 72, Lebanon State Forest is one of the largest state forests in New Jersey. Unfortunately it was recently renamed the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, which may cause some confusion for those of you searching on the web or using some old guide books.

The forest is in the Pine Barrens, so expect the soil to be sandy, and filled with pines (of course). If you go off the Cranberry Trail, I would strongly suggest long shirts, pants and lots of insect repellent. In the summer of around 1994, I went on a hike with some friends. The Cranberry Trail was not carved out, so we had to brush against trees and leaves. We had ticks all over our bodies. If you are squeamish about such things, stick to the Cranberry Trail.

As for the July 2003 hike: The Cranberry Trail is quite wide, and is ADA accessible, so it is smooth. There were no branches or leaves in the path, and I didn't get a tick or even a mosquito bite. (I didn't know the Cranberry Trail existed, so I liberally sprayed my clothes with "Deep Woods Off", and wore a long sleeved shirt and jeans. I would have worn shorts and a t-shirt if I did it again). However, if you stand too long in one place, the insects will take an interest in you. You'll soon hear the buzzing of the investigating insect, leading you to march forward. I also suggest at least 1 liter of water per person on the trail.

Oddly enough, I found more life in the New Mexico high desert than in the Pine Barrens. On the other hand I didn't go exploring off the trail, probably for fear of the dreaded tick, so I didn't allow myself the opportunity to find anything unusual. Nevertheless, there are a few good shots, so enjoy.

Note: I took a second trip to Lebanon SF the very same week, hence the Lebanon Redux motif.
