Bandelier
National Monument houses the ruins of the Tyunonyi Pueblo as
well as cliff dwellings in Frijoles Canyon. Bandelier is located off of
NM Route 4, close to Los Alamos. Many bikers pedal along these roads, so
drive slower than usual and keep your eyes peeled. Expect spectacular
rock formations.
Entrance to Bandelier was $10 when I went (Aug. 2002).
Recorded information on Bandelier is at (505) 672-0343. You can also

Expect your trip to last half a day. If you arrive
earlier in the day, you can land a prime parking spot, and leave just
after lunch time. I suggest eating lunch at the snack bar (which is a
good deal, actually). I estimate it takes slightly over 1 hour to get to
Bandelier from Santa Fe. You don't need to be in good physical condition
to take the basic walk through the ruins, but you must be in good
shape to climb the ladders up to the Ceremonial Cave. If you have a fear
of heights or suffer from physical disabilities or conditions, do not
climb the ladders. Enjoy the view instead, and laugh at others who get
winded at the second level. There are no water fountains in the park,
but there is one restroom (extremely basic - Princes and Princesses,
take note) in the park. Take your time and enjoy the park.
The walk along the creek running through the park will
no doubt make pedestrians forget they are in New Mexico.
